Cleopatra Hospital splits the roles of Chairman and CEO; Nile Badrawy lawsuit postponed

Cleopatra Hospital Company (CHC) (CLHO.CA) shareholder’s approved the split of the roles of Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer, during the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 19 September 2016, where Dr.Tarek Zahed was appointed non-executive Chairman. Accordingly, Dr. Ahmed Ezzeldin has been named an executive member of the Board in addition to his role as Group CEO. Zahed was a founder of Cairo Specialised Hospital in 1981, where he has been chairman since 2001, and served as a consultant to the Medical Services Division of the Egyptian Presidency for 25 years. On a different note, Nile Badrawy Hospital (NBH)'s malpractice lawsuit was postponed to 25 October 2016 for judgment. The malpractice incident took place prior to CHC’s acquisition of NBH, which at the time did not carry malpractice insurance (it started to carry malpractice insurance in February 2015). CHC is involved in ten malpractice lawsuits (as of 11 May 2016) with claimed amounts of damages ranging between EGP40,000 and EGP300,000, except for NBH’s malpractice incident in which the claim is EGP95mn. A provision of cEGP1mn was taken for the latter, based on the assessment of NBH’s external legal counsel handling the case in light of the precedents of similar cases in Egyptian courts.
