Government to import 700k tonnes of raw sugar, buy 2mn tonnes of rice
Prime Minister Sherif Ismail ordered 700k tonnes of raw sugar to be imported this year to fill the gap between demand and supply in the local market. Cabinet also decided during its meeting to buy 2mn tonnes of rice from the local market, from which 1.2mn tonnes of white rice can be extracted. Earlier this year, the government had moved to exempt raw sugar from import duties until end-2016. (Al Borsa)
