Government looking to resolve TE-VFE conflict of interest before year-end; TE says it is not planning to exit VFE
The government has started studying how to govern the issue of Telecom Egypt’s (TE) [ETEL.CA] ownership of a 45% stake in Vodafone Egypt (VFE), following TE’s entrance to the mobile market, Al Masry Al Youm quoted anonymous sources as saying. The government intends to complete the study before end-2017, and various scenarios could be adopted, including turning TE into a holding company that would own an entity responsible for managing the VFE investment, the entrance of a new government entity, while simultaneously listing part of VFE, or the entrance of a new investor. This comes after VFE had reached out to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) to accelerate the resolution of the conflict of interest. On a related note, TE said it is not planning to exit its investment in VFE, Al Mal reported.
