Cement producers required to use 44% waste in energy mix by 2020
The Ministry of Environment has set a new stipulation for cement producers that import and rely on coal as an alternative fuel for cement production, which includes that all cement producers must rely on waste energy to contribute to a minimum of 44% of the energy mix by the year 2020 to reduce the usage of coal and Mazut, according to Minster Khaled Fahmy, speaking to Al Borsa. A number of producers have already introduced waste energy in their energy mix by 17-18%, including Cemex, Lafarge and Titan Cement. Producers that fail to comply with the waste energy requirements will not have their coal import licences renewed, as the government is not aiming at eliminating coal from the energy mix, albeit trying to limit its usage, Fahmy added.
