USD1bn Grand Egyptian Museum on track for soft opening in 2018
The construction of the Grand Egyptian Museum is currently 70% complete, according to Tarek Tawfik, General Director and Head Supervisor of the project. c4,000 out of Tutankhamun’s 5,000 artefacts collection have been moved there. He added that the pace of construction and the transfer of antiquities are on track to the set schedule, where a soft opening is expected in 2018. A number of parties are involved in financing the project, including the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which provided a soft fund of USD760mn over two tranches of USD300mn and USD460mn.The Egyptian government contributes the remaining USD300mn over three phases. The first part amounting to USD100mn was completely disbursed in FY16/17, while the two remaining parts are set for the current fiscal year.
