Tariff on imported poultry to be reinstated within the coming few days
The Cabinet is reportedly planning to reinstate tariffs on poultry within the coming two days, following a meeting with the Egyptian Poultry Association, which threatened to seek legal arbitration to have the measure scrapped. According to sources, Prime Minister Sherif Ismail was misinformed that there was a 20-25% shortfall in the supply of chicken in the market, which led to the decision of tariff removal. The decision allowed for 147k tonnes of poultry to enter the country in just a few days, which is nearly the same amount of chicken that Egypt imports in an entire year. Domestic poultry producers have welcomed the reversal of the decision, with some promising to double production and sell to the Supply Ministry at cheaper prices. (Al Borsa)
