Supermarket and hypermarket food sales to double from 2011 level by 2017
Supermarket and hypermarket food sales are expected to double from their 2011 level by 2017, accompanied by a large increase in the number of small-scale supermarket outlets, according to a report published by the USDA Foreign Agriculture Service. Despite the rapid expansion of supermarket chains, especially Turkish retailer BIM and Egyptian Kazyon over the past three years, modern supermarket chains still account for less than 1% of the establishments (23% of 2016 total retail sales) and the hypermarket segment accounts for only c5% of total retail sales. According to the report, Egyptian retail food market remains dominated by small, traditional grocers, butchers, bakers, etc., which account for 97% of total retail grocery firms (70% of total sales). It is expected, however, that chain supermarkets continue to grow at a higher rate than traditional grocers and gain market share from them.
