State electricity utility said to hike prices in July
The Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) committee is reportedly considering higher electricity prices for FY17/18, in line with the subsidy reform five-year plan announced in 2014. It is said to set on extending the timeline for the phase-out of electricity subsidies, originally scheduled to be entirely eliminated by 2019, and to increase the number of consumption tiers, according to officials from the Ministry of Electricity. The committee is reportedly suggesting increasing prices by 30-40% for top consumption tiers, to gradually increase to 60%. Those using the least electricity would reportedly see a 10-25% hike. The committee is preparing several suggestions and scenarios for the price hikes to present to Cabinet. There is no backing down from hiking electricity prices in July, the sources said, further suggesting that price hikes will vary by consumption tier.
