Saudi Arabia needs to invest USD71bn in power sector
Saudi Arabia will need to invest USD71bn (SAR266bn) to increase power generation capacity to 114GW by 2020, according to a new report by the Arab Petroleum Investments Corporation (APICORP). The Kingdom currently leads the drive to make necessary capacity additions by 2020, the agency said. Estimated capacity stood at around 80GW in 2015, of which state utility Saudi Electricity Company represented around 60GW. Major upcoming projects include the 3.1 GW Yanbu 3 plant, expected on line in 2016, and the 2.6GW Shuqaiq plant, the report said. According to APICORP, the GCC overall will require USD85bn to add 69 GW of generating capacity and another USD51bn for transmission and distribution over the next five years. (Argaam)
