Saudi Arabia lifts ban on Bangladeshi workers after seven years
Saudi Arabia has lifted a seven-year-old ban on the recruitment of Bangladeshi workers, Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement. The ban had covered all workers except for domestic workers and was imposed amidst a global economic downturn after allegations of anomalies in the recruitment process, the statement said. The decision came as thousands of workers, most of whom are from the Philippines and India, are stranded in Saudi Arabia after big lay-offs triggered by a slump in oil prices. (Reuters)
