Parliament gives initial approval for Civil Service law
Voting on the Civil Service Act will resume today after it passed 12 articles on Sunday. The draft law has been amended by the House Manpower Committee, including the amendment setting annual raises at 7% - which was contested by the government. Other amendments include: provisions for the hiring of temporary workers, setting maternity and paternity leave, and ensuring no firing or income reduction of currently employed bureaucrats. In January, MPs rejected the reforms, believing it would affect government employees unfairly. (Bloomberg, Al Masry Al Youm, Al Ahram)
