Parliament approves constitutional amendments; referendum next week
Egypt’s Parliament on Tuesday approved amendments to the constitution that could keep President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi in power until 2030, though they still have to be endorsed in a public referendum to take effect next week. The changes would extend Al Sisi’s current term to six years from four and then allow him to run again for a third term, which would last six years. Egyptians abroad will head to the polls on 20-21 April, and 55mn eligible voters within Egypt will vote between 22-24 April.
