Egypt's Parliament approved the Civil Service Law on Tuesday after making amendments. The Law, which will regulate c6.5mn public employees, introduces performance reviews, aiming at combating corruption and bureaucracy. Changes to the bill include restoring some of the benefits to them and making it harder to reduce staff compared to the initial proposal. Thousands of government workers had protested against the law when it was first issued, saying it reduced their benefits and allowed officials to promote whoever they liked to high-ranking posts, as opposed to the current system based on seniority.
