High-speed rail to begin Mecca-Medina trips in September
A high-speed rail will start its two-way trip between Mecca and Medina as of September. The train line is a network connecting the Kingdom’s two holy cities of Mecca and Medina through five stations, including Jeddah, King Abdul Aziz International Airport and King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) in Rabigh. In 2011, the Spanish-Saudi Al-Shoula consortium won a contract to develop the second phase of the rail project at a total cost of SAR30.8bn (USD8.2bn). The Saudi Arabian government has approved paying an additional EUR210mn above the project’s budget, the statement said.
