Government plans to offer a number of healthcare units to private sector to make use of unutilised assets

The president announced that the government intends to offer a number of healthcare units (Takamol hospitals) to investors and charities to make use of the unutilised equipment in those hospitals due to a lack of financial resources for renovations work. The Ministry of Health and Population issued a release confirming that the government’s plan includes partnering with the private sector to renovate and operate the equipment but not privatise them; while clarifying that the services to be offered need to be kept at a minimal price for the partnership to take place. Al Ahram announced a list of 88 hospitals that will be offered as per the government’s plan. There are 515 Takamol hospitals that were established in 1997 as intermediaries between central hospitals and primary healthcare centers in rural areas to expand healthcare services and beds’ capacity in Egypt; however, around 377 of the Takamol hospitals had been unutilised since then.
