Government plans second phase of economic reforms, includes new food subsidy programme
The government is reportedly planning a second phase of economic reforms to be discussed by the Cabinet before being presented to President Sisi. The new measures will include imposing progressive taxes and improving the efficiency of food subsides. The latter will be sought by linking the automated wage system with citizens' national identification numbers, so as to distribute food subsidies based on monthly income. The proposed food subsidy system would provide a 100% subsidy for nationals earning less than EGP2,500 per month, 75% for those who earn less than EGP3,500, 25% for those who make less than EGP4,500, and those making more than EGP4,500 will not be eligible.
