Government cancels import tariffs on sugar, Supply Minister says
Egypt has cancelled tariffs on imported sugar, Egypt’s Minister of Supply announced on Friday. The tariffs on imported raw sugar were increased in February from 2% to 20%, and on refined sugar from 10% to 20%. On 1 November, the Ministry of Supply increased the price of the subsidised sugar sold through ration cards by 40% to reach EGP7/kg after weeks of a market shortage of sugar supplies. The Ministry has raised its provision of sugar from 4,000 tonne/day to 9,000 tonnes/day to secure the essential commodity. 71mn people use the government's subsidy cards to buy essential food goods, according to the Ministry.
