GDP growth jumps to 4.3%; budget deficit widens to 12.1% in FY15/16, PM says

Prime Minister Sherif Ismail said on Monday that Egypt’s GDP grew at 4.3% in FY15/16, up from 4.2% in the previous fiscal year. The PM’s GDP figure differed from a report from two finance ministry officials earlier on Monday that it grew 3.8% in FY15/16. Both figures were lower than the targeted growth of 5% for the year. Ismail also said that the budget deficit had widened to 12.1%, from 11.5% a year earlier, whereas Deputy Finance Minister for Treasury Affairs Mohamed Muait told Reuters on Monday that the budget deficit for FY15/16 had reached 12.2%. We estimate GDP to have grown to 3.7% and the budget deficit to have widened to 12.2% in FY15/16. (Reuters, Mohamed Abou Basha)
