GCC interconnection authority reportedly studying shared energy production
The Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority is reportedly undertaking a study on shared power plants in the GCC for electricity production from renewable resources and natural gas, especially considering Qatar’s global position in gas production that could be used as energy source for electricity production in the GCC, according to Al-Sharq. The authority aims at the export of excess energy within GCC countries, as well as merging grids among countries, the article added, suggesting that political factors might have been the cause to the delay in GCC grid connection. On another note, the authority is currently conducting economic and technical feasibility studies for grid connection between GCC and Africa, Asia and Europe, which is expected to complete by end of 2017.
