The Sultanate's maiden effort to develop commercial-scale wind-based electricity generation capacity is expected to be somewhat delayed because of a decision by the joint venture partners to retender the project. Oman's Rural Areas Electricity Company (Raeco), a subsidiary of the Electricity Holding Company (Nama Group), is developing the project in collaboration with the UAE's renewable energy company, Masdar. Initially planned for launch in 2017, the landmark venture -- envisaging 50 megawatts (MW) of wind-based capacity - is proposed to be developed in the windswept Thamrait province of Dhofar Governorate.
