Electricity regulator said to recommend 15-40% price hike in July
A committee at Egyptian Electric Utility and Consumer Protection Regulatory Agency has reportedly recommended a price hike of 15-40% under the FY17/18 budget, according to unnamed source at the Ministry of Electricity. Consumption tier between 0-50 kWh would see a 20% increase (which will save EGP450mn in subsidies out of EGP1.5bn/month), 25% for 51-100 kWh (will save EGP800mn out of EGP2bn/month), 30% for 101-200 kWh (to save EGP3bn out of EGP9bn/month), 35% for 201-350 kWh (to save EGP3.5bn out of EGP11bn/month), 30% for 351-650 kWh (to save EGP2bn out of EGP6bn/month), 30% for 651-1000 kWh (to save EGP200mn out of EGP600mn/month), and 20% for above 1,000 kWh (which will be totally unsubsidised). The committee is also considering a lower hike for the low income-segments (by 15% rather than 30%) and a higher hike for the higher consumption brackets (40% rather than 35%). The recommendations are yet to be reviewed by the government, the source added.
