Egypt court suspends annulment of Red Sea island deal with Saudi Arabia
Egypt's Court of Urgent Matters has reportedly ordered the suspension of an earlier court ruling that aned a deal to hand over two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia, according to judicial sources. Constitutional experts dismissed that court's ruling, claiming that the verdict is unconstitutional and void and that the Court of Urgent Matters was not qualified to pronounce on matters related to public administration. Egypt had announced in April a maritime border accord with Saudi Arabia, which could see it lose control of two Red Sea islands and has caused public unrest. In June, an administrative court cancelled the accord after a lawsuit was filed against it, saying Egyptian sovereignty over the islands held and could not be given up. Authorities lodged a formal appeal with the Higher Administrative Court, and that appeal is still pending. (Reuters)
