Egypt cancels zero-tolerance policy for ergot in wheat imports

Egypt has reversed its zero-tolerance policy on the ergot fungus and will return to international standards, Agriculture Minister Essam Fayed said on Wednesday, adding that both outstanding and future wheat cargoes will be subject to new rule allowing a 0.05% ergot level. 540,000 tons of wheat was prevented from entering Egypt due to that zero-tolerance ergot policy that was applied retroactively to outstanding contracts last month, according to the Supply Ministry. Traders expressed skepticism when asked by reporters, saying that there needs to be new legislation and this is not enough for any supplier to participate. (Bloomberg, Reuters)
