EGP slumps sharply to bid-offer cEGP17.41 Sunday from cEGP15.98 Saturday, demand on USD surges
Banks reportedly trade the dollar at a range of EGP17.00-17.30 buying and EGP17.40-17.95 selling on Sunday from EGP15.0-16.15 buying and EGP16.00-16.75 selling on Saturday. On Sunday’s interbank market, the dollar was traded at a range of EGP17.14-17.15 buying and EGP17.65-17.67 selling, compared with a range of EGP15.54-15.61 buying and EGP16.14-16.22 selling on Thursday, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) data showed. The pound has also weakened on the parallel market, trading USD roughly in line with banks’ rates. The drop comes a day after reports saying that the Central Bank had verbally informed banks over the weekend to supply USD to importers of non-essential goods provided they prioritise basic imports and obtain the USD from the interbank market. Banks reportedly scrambled to meet a surge in USD demand, saying that people are willing to buy at any price and that there many importers of non-essential goods. (CBE, Al Borsa, Reuters)
