EGP slightly rebounds to bid-offer cEGP17.53 on Tuesday, float hits medicine supplies
Banks reportedly trade the dollar at a range of EGP17.20-17.42 buying and EGP17.60-17.90 selling on Tuesday from EGP17.25-17.45 buying and EGP17.60-18.05 selling on Monday. On Tuesday’s interbank market, the dollar was traded at a range of EGP17.29-17.30 buying and EGP17.78-17.82 selling, compared with a range of EGP17.36-17.39 buying and EGP17.85-17.89 selling on Monday, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) data showed. Meanwhile, pharmacies across the country are running short of medicines - including live-savers - as a plunge in currency value and strict government price caps have made products unprofitable to produce or imports. Pharmaceutical firms reportedly say they have been forced to phase out certain medicine to stay in business. Ahmed al-Ezaby, head of the Medicine Industry Division at Federation of Egyptian Industries, said Egypt imports about USD600mn in finished medicines per year and USD1.8bn in active ingredients.
