Dubai plans hydroelectric plant to diversify energy supply
Dubai plans to build a hydroelectric power plant as the emirate seeks to diversify energy supply and boost economic growth. The plant will be located in the Hatta area, a mountainous area near the UAE border with Oman. The project will generate 250MW by use of force of water stored in a reservoir and then released downhill into a lower basin to turn turbines. The project will used solar power to pump the water back from the lower reservoir up to the higher one. Dubai is seeking to produce 7% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. (Bloomberg)
