Court hands down ex-top auditor one year over corruption remarks
An Egyptian court handed former head of the anti-graft watchdog, the Central Auditing Agency, Hisham Genena, one year in prison on charges of spreading false news for his earlier statements in December 2015 about the cost of corruption in the country of EGP60bn (cUSD67.6bn) in 2015. Later, he said he was misquoted, adding that the estimate covered four years. Genena was first referred to trial in June, to pay a EGP20,000 (USD2,250) fine, and was also ordered to pay a EGP10,000 bail pending an appeal before a higher court. (DPA)
