Cabinet accepts resignation of Supply Minister, names Trade Minister as Interim
Minister of Supply Khaled Hanafy resigned amidst criticism from MPs who formed a fact-finding commission to investigate a wheat procurement fraud. In July, an inquiry was launched into whether millions of dollars intended to subsidise farmers were used to purchase wheat that did not exist. A corruption report, delivered last week to the speaker of Parliament, concluded that 222,000 tonnes of wheat were missing at 10 private storage sites visited by the committee after the Egyptian office of the Prosecutor-General had revealed that cEGP533mn (USD60mn) had been stolen by officials within the Ministry of Agriculture, in collusion with silo owners.
