Banks loosen restrictions on USD abroad

Egyptian banks have begun to ease restrictions set earlier on Egyptians’ use of USD abroad through cash and electronic payment cards. National Bank of Egypt (NBE), Banque Misr and Banque du Cairo were the first to make this move and were followed by other banks such as Commercial International Bank (CIB), Bank of Alexandria, Societe Arabe Internationale de Banque (SAIB), and Misr Iran Development Bank (MIDB). According to a senior banker, this move comes after the improvement of their foreign exchange resources, following the EGP free float. Banks received an estimated USD80mn in liquidity on Thursday and Friday—eight times what banks used to receive before the flotation. NBE raised limits of the use of its credit cards abroad, with spending limit changed to USD1,000 for Classic card, USD2,000 for Gold card and to USD4,000 for Platinum card. Banque Misr brought its Classic card spending limit from USD1,000 to USD2,500, the Gold from USD2,000 to USD4,000, and the Platinum from USD4,000 to USD8,000. CIB restored its monthly cash withdrawal via White cards at EGP750 and limited spending to EGP8,000, after pausing withdrawal and purchases of that card earlier. The bank also increased the monthly withdrawal limits for a number of its cards to about EGP1,750 and USD2,000 and raised purchases limits to about EGP24,000 and USD30,000. Other banks are considering similar changes such as Emirates NBD, Arab Investment Bank (AIB), the Housing and Reconstruction Bank, Export Development Bank of Egypt (EDBE), United Bank, Industrial Development Bank, and the Industrial Development & Workers Bank of Egypt.
